Covid meant that the July meeting was cancelled, but here’s an update from Liz about this month’s reads.
The YCAA Book Group was cancelled for the July get-together as Covid had struck at least three of us. Best to stay away when a vicious virus is about! Apologies to those who arrived to find no one there.
We do not meet during August as it is usually holiday season, and it gives everyone the chance to read some of the books that have gathered during the year to make a ‘To Be Read’ pile. I have selected some to read and just need a quiet time and a lounger in the garden to feel very indulgent. It is also the month when people make suggestions for books to read for our meeting on the second Tuesday in September, the 13th, at 12 noon in Westlands Lounge. Two suggestions are ‘EXIT’ written by Belinda Baur, and the other is the beginning of the series written by Abir Mukherjee, ‘A Rising Man’.
Books open up different worlds for a reader and when we learn in history lessons at school about the aftermath of WW1 and the Spanish flu in 1919, we need a good crime novel to transport us into another place where life was continuing but in a very different way. Our protagonist is sent by the Metropolitan Police to India in 1920 and the joys of reading will immerse you into a fascinating time and place. Abir’s latest book in the series of, so far, five novels featuring Captain Sam Wyndham, takes us further along the decade with riveting characters and plots. If you are able to join us, then bring along some suggestions for us all to enjoy.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting is at 12 noon in the Westlands Lounge on Tuesday 13th September 2022. Hopefully everyone will be healthy again by then and we’ll see you there!
